Medusa in Greek Mythology The Three Gorgons are sisters: Medusa (the Ruler) is a mortal, her immortal sisters are Stheno (the Strong) and Euryale (the Far-Springer). Medusa, in the form of a gorgon, can be viewed as a symbol of evil but also a symbol of Power. Medusa would be confined to a cave, and anyone who made eye contact with the Gorgon would be turned to stone. Athena cursed the mortal Medusa with a hideous face and snakes for hair. Athena, outraged by this incident, cursed Medusa and turned her wonderful hair into venomous snakes, her beautiful face turned so ugly that any man who gazed upon would turn to stone. Medusa was a temptress among the gods, and Poseidon had impregnated the mortal while in the temple of Athena. Poseidon ravaged her and took what she held dearly, her purity. However, lesser known is the story of how she ended up that way. Universally known for her snake filled hair and the power to turn anyone to stone, Medusa is often portrayed to be a cruel monster.
